HYDRANT & VALVE MAINTENANCE

SCHEDULED FOR THE WEEK SEPTEMBER 9TH

You may notice water system crews working at manholes and fire hydrants and see water running along the street. Once a year we perform maintenance on the valves and fire hydrants which includes operating the valves and fire hydrants. When we operate the hydrants, the water mains get flushed and the water flows onto the ground. This is an important preventive maintenance activity. Although it may appear to be a waste of water, the process is part of a routine maintenance program necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system and allow us to ensure the valves and hydrants are in proper working order.  Valves and hydrants that are found to not be in working order are tagged and submitted for repair.

As a result of operating fire hydrants, residents may experience temporary discoloration of their water. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt and air and does not affect the safety of the water. If you experience discoloration in your water after crews have been flushing in your neighborhood, clear the pipes in your home by running all water faucets for a few minutes. There is no health hazard associated with discolored water.

BOIL ORDER FOLLOW UP

We at Glenbrook Sanitary District would like to apologize for the Boil Order that occurred on July 16, 2024.  The purpose of the Boil Order was the result of water service being accidentally turned off by the Village of Highland Park, without the District’s knowledge.

Highland Park was performing maintenance in the water meter pit that provides water service for the District.  Their goal was to replace the water meter that measures the amount of water the District purchases for your consumption.  Since proper notice was not provided to the District, the Highland Park water meter was not replaced.  Unfortunately, the Highland Park water meter still needs to be replaced.  The Village of Highland Park and the District are now working together to decide how best to replace the water meter without causing disruption to you.

Once both parties agree to a plan on how best to replace the Highland Park water meter, the District will share the information with you to include date and time the water meter replacement will occur.  Again, we apologize for the disruption of water service in July.  If you have any questions, please contact us at info@gsd.illinois.gov.
